A Reliable Foundation for Your Marine Paint System

A quality paint job starts with the right primer, and the Epifanes Epoxy Primer delivers a dependable base coat for two-component marine paint systems. Formulated with epoxy resin and zinc phosphate as the anti-corrosion agent, this primer bonds firmly to bare substrates and provides the filling and adhesion needed for a long-lasting topcoat. Whether you're refinishing a fibreglass hull, protecting a steel keel, or sealing bare plywood on a cabin sole, this primer is engineered to handle the job.

Multi-Substrate Versatility

One of the standout qualities of the Epifanes Epoxy Primer is its compatibility with multiple substrates. It serves as a bonding and filling primer on fibreglass (GRP), plywood, steel, and aluminium, making it a practical choice for boaters who need a single primer that works across different materials on the same vessel. It is approved for use both above and below the waterline, and for both interior and exterior applications. It also works well for the maintenance of existing epoxy systems.

High Build, Easy Sanding

The Epifanes Epoxy Primer is formulated for high filling capacity and quick building, allowing you to achieve a smooth, fair surface with fewer coats. Its semi-gloss finish sands easily, saving time during surface preparation. A recommended wet film thickness of 80–200 μm per coat yields a dry film thickness of 40–100 μm, giving you flexibility depending on the condition of the substrate and the desired level of filling.

Mixing, Thinning, and Application

This is a two-component system. The mixing ratio is 100 parts base component A to 25 parts curing component B by volume (100:14 by weight). After mixing, allow an induction time of 10–20 minutes at 20°C before application. The recommended thinner for brush, roller, and spray application is Epifanes Thinner D-601. Add thinner after mixing both components; the thinning ratio depends on the temperature of the mixed product and the work area.

  • For optimum adhesion on bare plywood and metal, thin the first coat by 20–25% with Epifanes Thinner D-601 and apply with a stiff brush.
  • Application tools: nylon roller, soft long-haired brush, conventional air spray, or airless spray.
  • Air spray: thin 10–20%, nozzle 1.5–1.8 mm, pressure 3–4 bar.
  • Brush/roller: thin 0–5%.
  • Airless spray: thin 0–5%, nozzle 0.015–0.020", pressure 150–180 bar.
  • Do not apply wet-in-wet. Avoid excessive wet films to prevent curtains and drying problems.
  • Avoid applying in direct sunlight or excessive wind, which causes rapid solvent loss and reduces flow.

Drying and Recoating Times

Drying times vary with temperature and humidity. At a dry film thickness of 50 μm, the following approximate times apply:

  • At 15°C / 65% relative humidity — dust dry: 3 hours, recoatable: 16 hours, through hardened: 7 days.
  • At 20°C / 65% relative humidity — dust dry: 2 hours, recoatable: 12 hours, through hardened: 5 days.
  • At 28°C / 65% relative humidity — dust dry: 1 hour, recoatable: 10 hours, through hardened: 4 days.
  • If the subsequent coat is applied within 5 days (at 18°C), intercoat sanding is not necessary. If recoated after 5 days, sand with P120 dry abrasive paper.
  • Potlife after mixing: 12 hours at 12°C, 8 hours at 20°C, 4 hours at 28°C.

Compatible Topcoats and Fillers

The Epifanes Epoxy Primer integrates into a broader Epifanes paint system. After 24 hours and sanding with P220–240 dry abrasive paper, it can be recoated with the following products:

  • Above the waterline: Epifanes Poly-urethane Yacht Coating, Epifanes Poly-urethane Primer.
  • Below the waterline: Epifanes Epoxy HB Coat, Epifanes Interimcoat.
  • Fillers (after 24 hours and sanding with P150–180): Epifanes Epoxy Filler 1300, Epifanes Epoxy Filler 1500, Epifanes Epoxy Filler LG 800, Epifanes Epoxy Finishing Filler.

Considerations for Canadian Boaters

Application conditions matter, especially in Canada's variable climate. Epifanes specifies a minimum application temperature of 12°C and a maximum of 28°C, with relative humidity between 50% and 75%. The substrate temperature must be at least 3°C above the dew point. For boaters in Atlantic Canada, the Great Lakes, or British Columbia, this means timing your primer work for warmer, drier days — typically late spring through early autumn. Store unmixed product in a closed container in a dark location between 5°C and 25°C; shelf life is approximately 2 years under these conditions.
