IMO IAMSAR Organization and Management (Volume 1) discusses the global SAR system concept, establishment and improvement of national and regional SAR systems, and co-operation with neighboring States to provide effective and economical SAR services.
Contains the three most important IMO instruments dealing with life-saving appliances; the LSA Code, the Revised Recommendation on Testing of Life-Saving Appliances MSC.81(70) and the Code of Practice for Evaluation, Testing and Acceptance of Prototype Novel Life-Saving Appliances A.520(13).
In 1973 the MSC agreed that when language difficulties arise English should be used for navigational purposes. Under STCW, the ability to use and understand the SMCP is required for the certification of officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more.
