Raymarine 12 Volt Type 3 Hydraulic Linear Drive Unit M81202
The first of three steps in selecting an autopilot is selecting the proper drive unit for the vessel. Raymarine autopilot drive units are available in array of sizes and configurations to accommodate various steering system types and vessel displacements. To properly select an autopilot you need to determine what type of steering system is installed.
The Type 3 Hydraulic Linear Drive M81202 is designed for large mechanically steered boats up to 77,000 lb (35,000 kg) displacement. This drives the rudder directly by attaching to the Rudder Quadrant or Tiller Arm.
The hydraulic linear drive system is designed for boats with existing mechanical steering systems, not hydraulic steering systems.
It provides a totally isolated autopilot steering system consisting of:
• Hydraulic ram: a self-contained autopilot steering cylinder with a load limiting system and a built in clutch (to allow friction-free steering when the autopilot is not in use).
• Reversing hydraulic pump: powers the hydraulic ram.
• Hydraulic fluid reservoir: supplies hydraulic fluid to the system.

Remember, always take the fully laden displacement weight of your vessel into account. This is often 20% above the designed displacement. Do not choose a pilot which will always be working at the limit of its design capabilities.
