A Classic Golden Finish for Marine Woodwork
Cetol Marine Natural Teak delivers the warm, golden hue that boat owners associate with beautifully maintained teak. As a translucent finish, it allows the natural grain and character of the wood to show through, rather than masking it under an opaque coating. The satin sheen strikes a balance between a traditional oiled look and the protection of a varnish, making it a popular choice for brightwork, handrails, trim, and cockpit accents.
Natural Teak is The Binnacle's most popular colour choice for first-time use on bare or stripped teak and other hardwoods, and it works equally well on interior and exterior surfaces above the waterline.
Next Wave™ UV-Absorbing Technology
Canadian boaters face intense UV exposure during long summer days on the water, and ultraviolet radiation is one of the primary causes of wood finish degradation. Cetol Marine Natural Teak incorporates Next Wave™ UV-absorbing technology, which uses specialty resins and advanced UV absorbers to shield the wood and the finish itself from sun damage. This helps maintain the rich colour and extends the interval between maintenance coats, reducing the amount of prep work needed each spring.
Flexible, Breathable Protection
Unlike rigid film-forming varnishes that can crack and peel as wood expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes, Cetol Marine Natural Teak provides a flexible, breathable finish. This is particularly important in the Canadian climate, where boats may experience wide temperature swings between a hot July afternoon and a cool autumn morning. The breathable formulation allows moisture vapour to escape from the wood, reducing the risk of blistering and delamination.
Application and Surface Preparation
Cetol Marine Natural Teak is designed for brush application using a long-haired bristle brush. Apply liberally in the direction of the grain, keeping a wet edge to prevent lap marks. Thoroughly saturate end grains where possible. The manufacturer recommends three coats on new wood, with a full 24 hours of drying time between each coat. Sanding between coats is not recommended, as it reduces dry film thickness.
- New wood: Remove surface oils and contaminants, then sand with 180–220 grit paper along the grain. Remove all sanding residue before applying.
- Previously coated wood: Remove all existing coatings by sanding with 120–180 grit paper or using a marine-grade chemical stripper. Then follow the new wood preparation steps.
- Weathered or previously oiled wood: Use a teak restorer with a nylon scruffing pad, rinse with fresh water, allow to dry, then follow the new wood preparation steps.
- Wood moisture content should be below 18% before application.
- Do not thin. Clean tools with Special Thinner 216.
Maintenance and Longevity
Regular inspection of all coated surfaces is essential. Problem areas should be addressed promptly, and maintenance coats should be applied routinely — the manufacturer recommends a maintenance period of no longer than one year. If the coating is allowed to weather beyond this period, restoring the surface becomes significantly more difficult.
Before applying a maintenance coat, clean the surface to remove contaminants. If blue fungi or mildew are present, treat with a teak restorer and nylon scruffing pad, rinse with fresh water, allow to dry, then lightly sand with 220–320 grit paper and remove residue before recoating. Always use the same Cetol product that was initially applied to achieve optimal colour results.
Compatibility and Versatility
Cetol Marine Natural Teak is suitable for use on all types of wood, including oily timbers such as teak. It can be used in sea water, fresh water, and brackish water environments — covering the full range of conditions Canadian boaters encounter from the Atlantic coast to the Great Lakes to British Columbia's Inside Passage.
For a high-gloss finish, Cetol Marine Gloss can be applied over the initial coats of Cetol Marine Natural Teak (refer to the Cetol Marine Gloss data sheet for details). Note that Cetol Marine Gloss is not suitable for use on decks. If using Cetol Marine Natural Teak as a deck coating, a non-skid compound can be sprinkled onto the wet surface of the second coat for added traction.
