What Is the Raymarine RS150 GNSS GPS Sensor?
The Raymarine RS150 is a remotely mounted GNSS receiver that provides accurate, real-time position data to compatible Raymarine navigation systems over a SeaTalkng network. It succeeds the earlier RS130 GPS sensor, offering a faster 10Hz position refresh rate and improved positioning accuracy. Whether you are navigating coastal waters, crossing open stretches, or manoeuvring in a busy harbour, the RS150 delivers the reliable satellite fix data your chartplotter and instruments depend on.
As a true GNSS receiver, the RS150 is not limited to the American GPS constellation. It also supports GLONASS, the Russian global navigation satellite system, giving it access to a larger pool of satellites for a more robust and consistent fix. The unit is also Galileo-ready and BeiDou-ready, with support for these additional constellations available via future software updates.
Key Performance Capabilities
The RS150 is built around a 72-channel receiver engine that can track a large number of satellites simultaneously across multiple constellations. This wide channel count helps the unit maintain a solid fix even in challenging conditions where some satellites may be obscured by rigging, masts, or terrain.
Position updates are delivered at 10Hz, meaning the receiver reports your vessel's position ten times per second. This high refresh rate is particularly valuable when integrated with autopilot systems, radar overlays, or AIS displays, where a stale position fix can introduce noticeable lag. Position accuracy without SBAS correction is better than 15 metres at 95% confidence, improving to better than 5 metres when SBAS differential correction is active. Speed accuracy is better than 0.3 knots at 95% confidence.
SeaTalkng and NMEA 2000 Connectivity
The RS150 connects to your onboard electronics network via a single SeaTalkng spur connection. SeaTalkng is Raymarine's network protocol for connecting compatible marine instruments and equipment, and it carries both data and power over the same backbone cable. Because the RS150 draws its power from the SeaTalkng backbone, no separate power wiring is required at the sensor itself, simplifying installation considerably.
For vessels running a DeviceNet or NMEA 2000 backbone rather than a SeaTalkng network, the RS150 can be connected using an optional SeaTalkng to DeviceNet adaptor cable (part A06045, sold separately). This makes the RS150 compatible with a broad range of multifunction displays and instruments from other manufacturers that support the NMEA 2000 standard.
The unit ships with a 6-metre SeaTalkng white spur cable, which provides ample reach for most mounting locations. Additional spur cable lengths are available separately if a longer run is required.
Mounting Options and Installation
The RS150 is designed for straightforward above-deck installation and supports several mounting configurations to suit different vessel layouts. Surface mounting using the included hardware is the most common approach, and the unit can be fitted to surfaces up to approximately 28 mm thick using the supplied threaded studs and finger nuts. A waterproof gasket is included to seal the mounting point.
For installations where a raised profile is preferred, or where the sensor needs to be mounted on a pole or rail, the optional Pole/Rail Mounting Adaptor Kit (A80370, sold separately) accepts a standard 1-inch 14 TPI threaded pole or rail fitting. An optional Deck Mounting (Clamshell/Riser) Kit (A80437, sold separately) provides additional surface, bracket, and riser mounting configurations.
When selecting a mounting location, the RS150 should be positioned with a clear, unobstructed view of the sky in all directions, on a level horizontal surface, and at least 1 metre away from devices that may cause interference such as VHF radios, motors, and other transmitters. It should not be mounted at the top of a mast or in the path of a radar scanner beam.
- Included hardware supports surface mounting on surfaces up to approximately 28 mm thick
- Optional pole or rail mounting via the A80370 adaptor kit (sold separately), requiring a 1-inch 14 TPI threaded fitting
- Optional deck mounting kit A80437 (sold separately) for surface, bracket, or riser configurations
- Waterproof gasket included for a sealed surface mount installation
Waterproofing and Environmental Ratings
The RS150 is rated waterproof to IPx6, meaning it is protected against powerful water jets from any direction. This makes it well suited to above-deck mounting where it will be exposed to spray, rain, and wash-down. The operating temperature range spans -25°C to +55°C, and the unit can be stored in temperatures from -25°C to +70°C, covering the full range of conditions encountered across Canadian boating seasons. Relative humidity tolerance is rated to a maximum of 93%.
While the IPx6 rating provides strong protection against water ingress under normal marine conditions, Raymarine notes that the waterproof rating does not extend to commercial high-pressure washing, and the unit should not be subjected to jet washing.
Power Supply and Electrical Integration
The RS150 operates on 12V DC supplied via the SeaTalkng backbone, with an operating voltage range of 9V DC to 16V DC. The unit includes protection up to 32V DC, providing a degree of tolerance against voltage spikes. Power consumption is a low 30 mA maximum, placing minimal demand on the vessel's electrical system. The unit's Load Equivalency Number (LEN) on the SeaTalkng network is 1.
For 24V vessels, a 5-amp regulated 24V DC to 12V DC converter is required to supply the SeaTalkng backbone. The SeaTalkng backbone's power supply should be protected by an in-line fuse rated at 5A, or a thermal breaker rated at 3A when only a single device is connected.
