Epifanes Polyurethane Yacht Coating is a chemical-drying, two-component finish built on a polyester resin base with an isocyanate hardener. The result is an extreme high-gloss surface that stands up to scratching, UV exposure, and the harshest marine weather conditions—including tropical climates. For Canadian boaters who face intense summer sun followed by freeze-thaw cycles, this level of UV and weather resistance helps maintain a showroom-quality hull season after season.
Versatile Substrate Compatibility
This coating works on virtually every common hull and superstructure material. It can be applied directly to intact fibreglass gelcoat (after degreasing and sanding) without a primer, or used over wood, steel, and aluminium when paired with the appropriate Epifanes primer system. It is also fully compatible with existing epoxy and polyurethane paint systems from any manufacturer, making it an excellent choice for maintenance recoats on previously painted surfaces.
- Fibreglass (FRP): Apply directly on intact gelcoat; use primer on cracked or aged gelcoat
- Wood: Use with Epifanes Epoxy Primer or Epoxy HB Coat — 2 primer coats recommended
- Steel: Use with Epifanes Epoxy Primer or Epoxy HB Coat — 3 primer coats recommended
- Aluminium: Use with Epifanes Epoxy Primer or Epoxy HB Coat — 2 primer coats recommended
Easy Brush and Roller Application
Designed for the hands-on boat owner, Epifanes Polyurethane Yacht Coating flows smoothly when applied with a long-haired soft brush or foam roller. The formula self-levels to minimise brush marks, and the generous pot life at typical workshop temperatures gives you ample working time. Avoid painting in direct sunlight or high wind, as rapid solvent loss reduces flow. If the product pulls or becomes difficult to work, up to 10% Epifanes Polyurethane Brush Thinner may be added.
- Allow a 10-minute induction time after mixing before application
- Apply thin, even coats — do not apply wet-on-wet
- Recoat within 24–48 hours without sanding; after 48 hours, sand with 220G
- For a smoother finish between coats, intercoat sand with wet/dry 320G
- Minimum 3 coats recommended for a total of 4 mil dry film thickness
UV Filters for Long-Lasting Colour and Gloss
The high-end UV filters integrated into this formulation protect against discolouration and gloss degradation over time. Whether your vessel spends the summer on the Great Lakes, the Atlantic coast, or the Pacific Northwest, the coating maintains its depth of colour and mirror-like shine far longer than conventional single-component enamels. After full cure (7 days at 68°F/20°C), the surface can be polished for an even higher gloss—Epifanes recommends finishing with their Polyurethane Clear Gloss before polishing.
