Application and Surface Preparation

Micron CSC-CA can be applied by brush or roller. Note that it is not legal to spray antifouling paint in Canada. A minimum of two coats is recommended, with an extra stripe coat on high-wear areas such as chines, rudders, stern gear, and leading edges. The paint is compatible with most popular antifouling paints, provided the existing coating is aged, tightly adhered, and in sound condition.

• Previously painted surfaces in good condition: Sand with 80-grit paper and remove residue before applying.
• Previously painted surfaces in poor condition: Remove old antifouling with Interstrip Semi-Paste 299E.
• Bare fibreglass: Clean thoroughly, remove mould release wax with Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202, sand with 80-grit paper to a flat matte finish, then apply at least two coats.
• Bare wood: Sand with 80-grit paper, wipe with Brush-Ease 433, and thin the first coat 10% with Special Thinner 216.

High Solids Formulation and Reduced VOC

Micron CSC-CA features a high solids formulation with 62% volume solids on average. This makes it easier to achieve the recommended dry film thickness in fewer passes while keeping VOC levels lower than many conventional antifouling paints. The active ingredient, cuprous oxide at 42.79%, provides robust biocidal protection against marine growth.

Drying and Overcoating Times

Drying times vary with temperature. At 25°C (77°F), the paint is touch dry in approximately 4 hours and ready for immersion in about 8 hours. At cooler Canadian spring temperatures of 5°C (41°F), expect touch dry in roughly 12 hours and immersion readiness in 12 hours. Overcoating with another coat of Micron CSC-CA requires a minimum of 6 hours at 25°C, extending to 24 hours at 5°C. There is no maximum overcoat window — the product can be overcoated after extended periods.

Compatibility and Overcoating Notes

Micron CSC-CA can be applied over most popular antifouling paints as long as the old coating is in sound condition. It can also be used to overcoat aged VC 17m surfaces — simply remove fouling with a high-pressure freshwater wash, wet sand with 120-grit sandpaper, remove residue, and apply two coats of Micron CSC-CA. Note that Micron CSC can be overcoated with Micron CSC-CA, but the two products cannot be stirred and mixed together. Colour may change upon immersion; this does not affect antifouling performance.

Safety and Storage

Micron CSC-CA contains biocides and should be handled with appropriate personal protective equipment, including chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection. Antifouling paints should only be wet sanded — never dry sand or burn off old antifouling coatings. Store in a well-ventilated area with the container tightly closed, at temperatures between 5°C and 35°C, and keep out of direct sunlight. The product is classified as a flammable liquid (UN 1263, Class 3, Packing Group III) and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects — avoid release to the environment.
