As per MARPOL 73/78 a list of Machinery Space Operations relating to oil is to be recorded by every ship of 400 gross tonnage and above and every oil tanker of 150 gross tonnage and above. The Oil Record Book Part I shall be preserved for a period of three years after the last entry has been made.
As per Regulation 36, of Annex I of MARPOL 73/78 a list of Cargo and Ballast Operations relating to oil is to be recorded by every oil tanker of 150 gross tonnage and above. This is in addition to record keeping of that ships machinery space operations.
Modern navigators are still required to determine and record the magnetic compass error at least once a watch and after any major alteration of course. This checking and recording of the error allows the navigator to monitor the Deviation which in turn could show the need for adjusting or repairing the magnetic compass.
