Its natural draft burner design converts #2 diesel fuel into clean, dry heat without the need for complex electronics or thermostatic controls. For Canadian boaters who extend their season into the cooler months — or who live aboard through fall and early winter — the Newport provides a dependable heat source that runs on the same fuel already in your tanks.

Because the Newport operates on natural draft principles, it can function without electrical power. The included 12V draft assist fan is recommended for start-up and higher heat settings but is not strictly required, giving you a measure of independence from your vessel's electrical system.

How the Natural Draft Burner Works

A natural draft appliance relies on the heat generated inside the burner to create an upward draw through the chimney. As hot exhaust rises, cooler fresh air is pulled into the burner from the cabin, mixing with vaporised fuel to sustain clean combustion. This self-sustaining cycle means the heater can operate continuously as long as fuel is supplied and a fresh air vent remains open.

The metering valve — factory calibrated for #2 diesel — controls fuel flow to the burner via a float mechanism that maintains a consistent oil level. Valves for kerosene and #1 diesel are available separately for boaters operating in extremely cold conditions where lower-viscosity fuels flow more reliably.

Draft Assist Fan and Electrical Details

The included 12V DC draft assist fan draws just 0.4 amps and provides 67 CFM of air flow at 44.2 dBA. It is wired through an on/off switch and speed control, giving you adjustable air delivery during start-up and when running at higher fuel settings. The fan can also be converted to operate on 24V or 32V systems.

Wiring is straightforward using 18-gauge wire and a 5-amp fuse. Weatherproof connections such as soldered or push-on terminals are recommended for the marine environment.

Optional Hot Water Capability

The Newport accepts an optional 1-turn hot water coil (sold separately) that can provide an estimated 5 to 10 gallons of hot water per hour. This makes the heater a dual-purpose appliance — warming the cabin while also supplying hot water for washing and other domestic needs aboard.

Maintenance and Longevity

Dickinson recommends cleaning the metering valve's needle and seat before first use — even on brand-new units — and at the start of each boating season. Regular burner cleaning to remove carbon deposits ensures the burner stays hot enough to vaporise fuel properly, maintaining clean combustion and reducing soot.

The chimney and chimney cap should also be inspected and cleaned periodically. Carbon build-up inside the chimney restricts draft and can compromise safe operation. The stainless steel construction of both the appliance body and chimney components resists corrosion in the marine environment, contributing to a long service life.
